D&I2603. Beyond Awareness: Systems That Work for Neurodivergent Accounting Professionals
Neurodiversity is more than a buzzword, and awareness alone isn't enough. As working professionals, our leaders may have a general understanding of topics such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Dyslexia, and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). But effective inclusion efforts can't stop at acknowledgment; true progress requires systems that work.
This session goes beyond surface-level understanding to explore what neuro inclusion really looks like in accounting. Led by the founders of OvataCollective, two neurodivergent accounting professionals with lived experience of ADHD, the session blends professional insight with real-world strategies for creating environments where neurodivergent team members can thrive.
Participants will gain perspective on how traditional firm structures, time management norms, and productivity expectations may unintentionally create barriers for neurodivergent individuals. We’ll explore how traits common in ADHD, ASD, and other neurodivergent profiles often show up in accounting workplaces, and how these traits frequently coincide with valuable strengths like hyper-focus, creative problem-solving, and deep pattern recognition.
But this session isn’t just about understanding; it’s about action.
We’ll share practical, systems-level adjustments that firms and leaders can implement, from rethinking meeting expectations and communication styles to adjusting performance evaluations and workflows. Through stories from our own experiences and from professionals across the industry, we’ll highlight small shifts that have led to meaningful improvements in team cohesion, retention, and individual performance. These insights are especially valuable for those leading teams, designing workflows, or shaping the future of firm culture.
What makes this session unique is its dual perspective: both presenters are neurodivergent professionals with experience navigating the accounting profession from within. Rather than speaking about neurodivergent people, we speak as them, bringing authenticity and nuance often missing from diversity conversations.
This session is part leadership development, part operational insight, and part mindset shift. Attendees will be encouraged to reflect on their own leadership style and team culture, and to identify opportunities for inclusive growth, whether they’re managing others or managing up. The tools shared are applicable across firm sizes and roles, offering both emerging and established leaders a framework to support diverse thinking styles and build stronger, more resilient teams.
By focusing on systems, not just symptoms, this session empowers leaders to move beyond awareness and build workplaces where every kind of mind can thrive.
