Growing up in the small Caribbean island of Grenada, entrepreneurship was very much visible, particularly in my own family. I came from a family of lawyers – an uncle who owned his practice later became a judge and became a Governor General. My dad went from running someone else’s business to running his bookstore, a store that is still in the family today. Doing my own thing is in my DNA - literally.
Joining the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) while I attended Long Island University, not only inspired me but lit an unquenchable fire under me when I learned that black accountants make up less than 2% of CPAs in the United States. And so, I made an intentional plan to become one.
On my journey, I worked at some of the industry’s leading firms upon receiving my MBA, like PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Mitchell & Titus, and Ernst & Young. While working for these financial giants I realized the benefits of working with smaller, more intimate personal groups. It was here I recognized that to build the mutual virtues that both clients and I value, like trustworthiness, integrity, and reliability - it had to be nurtured on a one-to-one basis.
And so, I left my job and started my tax and accounting firm - jmWilliams CPA, LLP. I have always prided myself in being an avenue to provide more than just tax services. My team and I have examined and provided resolutions to some of the most multifarious issues companies can face. In 2019 alone, we saved one of our clients upwards of $200,000 in taxes the moment our tax planning strategies were implemented.
