Mazin Joumaa

Mazin Joumaa is the Senior Vice President, Head of Enterprise Risk for Navy Federal Credit Union. He is responsible for managing the organization's efforts in identifying, assessing and mitigating internal and external risks to Navy Federal and ensuring compliance with the Enterprise Risk programs. This includes both financial and non-financial risks such as credit, market, liquidity, model, technology, operational, and third-party as well as data governance. His teams provide valued services in defining enterprise risk standards and frameworks, providing effective challenge/alternative approaches, risk insights and reporting, and acting as trusted advisors in risk for the entire credit union. Mazin subscribes to servant leadership, building strong teams within the organization that can be relied upon to achieve their aims in safeguarding the organization.

Mazin joined Navy Federal in 2021 to lead Model Risk Management (MRM) before being promoted to lead all of risk. As the leader of the MRM division, he established and built a full MRM function from the ground up. As part of this effort, he was instrumental in developing and executing on a roadmap that led to what is now a robust end-to-end MRM program for the organization. Mazin made it a priority to implement an efficient and effective operating model with top talent and a diverse range of advanced skillsets. In addition, Mazin led the development and implementation of Navy Federal Principles of Ethical AI, Data, and Modeling.

Mazin has over 22 years of experience in financial services, consulting and operations, including 12 years of leadership in a risk management function. Prior to his tenure at Navy Federal, he was Head of Enterprise Model Risk Governance and Operations and the model risk process lead for Capital Planning/Stress Testing at Capital One. He was a key lead in their Model Risk Management program build that started in late 2011, having co-authored policies, standards, and procedures, and co-led development of their MRM framework. Mazin was also part of leadership teams in support of various Capital One Enterprise Risk Management and Operational Risk Management initiatives. He also served as a board member and advisor to a biometrics payment startup.

Mazin is a risk thought leader and model risk industry expert. He was also a Product Owner for a large bank's internally designed and developed Model Risk Governance System and is listed as an "Inventor" for its patent filing consideration.

Mazin holds an MBA from Arizona State University and a BS in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech, and is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. When not busy with work, Mazin enjoys spending time with his wife and his three children. He is also an avid hiker who loves to fish and travel the world experiencing different cultures. He believes in the motto: "live to impress yourself," as this ensures personal fulfillment and a never-ending path of curiosity and learning.
